Motor Ombudsman reports record number of EV disputes

Electric vehicle disputes received by the Motor Ombudsman rose by 30% to a record high in the first quarter of the year.
It received a total of 641 EV disputes, which is up from the 492 it received in the same period of 2024.
However, the increase is comparable to the 43% rise in EV sales during 2024, and further analysis of the figures reveal that EVs actually generate far fewer disputes than their petrol and diesel vehicles.
The Motor Ombudsman found that EVs generate one dispute for every 195 cars compared to one every 41 petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles.
Customer service accounted for 42% of disputes, driven by factors, such as delivery delays, vehicle specifications not meeting order forms, spare keys not being provided, and vehicles being damaged during repairs.
Meanwhile, chassis and motor issues accounted for 13% of disputes, electric faults also made up 13% of disputes, while nine per cent related to battery issues.
Range concerns made up just five per cent of disputes, with the same percentage relating to battery charging.
