Motorists open to driver-confidence lessons

Almost four in five drivers would consider taking professional refresher or driver-confidence lessons, new research by AA Insurance reveals.

It found that 79% said they would be interested in refreshing their skills behind the wheel with just 21% saying they would not.

Meanwhile, more than twice as many men (26%) as women (12%) said they would not consider taking a refresher lesson.

When asked what might convince them to undergo additional driver training, 28% said if family or friends raised concerns about their driving ability, 23% said to update knowledge of road rules, 22% said to restore confidence following a collision, and 19% said to regain skills lost after not driving for a while.

Mark Born, head of training at AA Driving School, said: “Almost four in five drivers being open to a refresher lesson shows that learning doesn’t necessarily stop when you pass your test. Roads, vehicles and the Highway Code change over time, while drivers can develop habits or simply find there are parts of driving they don’t encounter very often.

“Driver Confidence sessions can be tailored to the individual, whether they want to brush up on particular skills, return to driving after some time away or simply feel more confident behind the wheel.”
