Auto Windscreens welcomes EU ADAS proposals

Auto Windscreens has welcomed proposals from the European Commission to update road safety regulations around ADAS.

It is suggesting updates to periodic technical inspections – Europe’s equivalent to the UK’s MOT testing – to align with new technologies such as ADAS and EVs.

James MacBeth, managing director of Auto Windscreens, said: “It’s about time checks on ADAS systems were added to MOTs. In the EU, it’s mandatory for all new cars to be equipped with a range of these features, so we’re seeing the number of cars with this technology on the UK’s roads increasing at a tremendous rate.

“Not enough drivers know that if they have specific repairs on their vehicle or a windscreen replacement and they have ADAS technology, they need to have a calibration to keep it working safely. If a radar sensor is incorrectly calibrated, for example 2 degrees away from being in its correct position, this can equate to a difference of 8.7 metres on the road.

“These type of sensors are used in Autonomous Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control, and are normally set behind the front badge or grille. If a vehicle has incorrectly calibrated ADAS, they may not work as they should and could put people at risk. Any decision by the Department for Transport to include ADAS checks in the MOT would get our full support.”
