Only a third of used car buyers trust dealers
Nearly seven in 10 used car buyers worry dealers sell used cars with hidden faults or undisclosed damage.
The latest Cazoo Consumer Insight Panel research found that 68% of car buyers said this was their main concern when buying a used car from a dealership, with 45% worried about unclear vehicle histories, 41% fearing they’ll be overcharged and 36% concerned about pushy sales tactics.
Meanwhile, a quarter of motorists expect poor aftersales support and hidden fees.
The poll of more than 2,000 car buyers showed that just 35.5% trust dealers, with 16.5% not trusting them and 48% undecided.
To improve trust levels, 61% wanted full vehicle history reports to be made more available, 42% backed independent vehicle inspections or warranties, with the same number in support of fixed prices with no haggling.
Lucy Tugby, chief marketing officer of Cazoo, said: “Our latest Consumer Insight Panel identifies the role dealers can play in recognising how trust can address the pain points experienced by many used car buyers.
“Time and again we see how the best performing used car dealers are the ones with processes in place to ensure vehicles are described accurately and sold with independent inspections and warranties.”
