Fleet drivers cite understanding as key to effective tech

A new report has found that proper understanding is key to fleet drivers using vehicle technology more effectively.

The report, Mobilising the Future of Fleets Report: Driver Coaching Edition, has been published by Teletrac Navman.

It found that 74% of drivers who had been properly onboarded with monitoring technology rated it as highly effectively, compared to just 19% of those who had not been given full understanding of the tech.

The report also revealed that 45% of drivers said surveillance was their number one concern, with 30% saying they’d be more open to the technology if it was proven to improve road safety.

Meanwhile, 47% said that the ability to view their own data easily would build their trust, while 43% emphasised the importance of fair and consistent use of data across all drivers.

Despite this, one in five drivers said that the technology had been installed by their employer with little or no communication from management.

Alain Samaha, CEO at Teletrac Navman, said: “Technology alone doesn’t drive safety outcomes, preparation does. Monitoring technology is most successful when it balances fleet goals and driver needs, and that starts with strong onboarding.

“Organisations that prioritise the people element see the real payoff: safer drivers, fewer claims, and a workforce that sticks around.

“If an operator finds itself in a difficult position with its drivers, providing visibility of personal data is essential to rebuilding trust. Drivers are not anti-technology, but they will be sceptical without transparency around data processing and management, and how it will affect them.”
