Drivers reminded of regulations around number plates

Drivers risk fines of up to £1,000 and could also invalidate their insurance if they are found to have non-compliant number plates.

Ahead of the launch of the new ’26 plates, Quotezone has warned motorists getting new plates to remember the many restrictions that in place around material, background patterns, and letter size.

It has reminded drivers that number plates must be made from reflective material, cannot have a background pattern, and the characters must be solid black, non-reflective, and meet specific height regulations. Failing to comply could invalidate insurance policies and result in fines of up to £1,000.

The warnings come after there were more than 20,000 reported incidents involving illegal number plates.

Number plate regulations

Greg Wilson, Quotezone CEO, said: “It is important that vehicles are kept legal and roadworthy. Number plate regulations are set by the DVLA so that vehicles can be easily identified by the police and ANPR cameras to help monitor and improve road safety.

“Drivers are warned they face costly fines and a failed MOT test plus the risk of voiding their insurance if their licence plate is dirty, obscured or not up to code.

“With the new 2026 plates launching in March, we’re issuing drivers a timely reminder to check their number plates are clean and comply with all DVLA regulations, especially those who have reprinted their plates in a bid to personalise the vehicle.”
