Wet winter causing water-related damage to vehicles

UK drivers have been warned that the wet winter and prolonged rain could be damaging their vehicles.

It has rained every day so far in 2026, with Met Office figures reporting that Northern Ireland endured its wettest January in 149 years and 26 further Met Office stations setting new monthly rainfall levels.

Meanwhile, the south of England saw 72% of February’s monthly average fall in the first eight days.

The unsettled weather is expected to persist at least until the end of the week, with a low-pressure system moving slowly across the UK. While unpleasant, the damp conditions could also be having a negative impact on vehicles.

Constant challenge

Chris Jevons at JTAPE said: “The UK climate presents a constant challenge for vehicles. Prolonged rain, damp air, road spray and blocked drains can all lead to hidden water damage.

“Many drivers only notice a problem once corrosion or electrical faults appear, by which point repairs can be expensive. Regular checks, particularly during the wetter months, can prevent long-term structural and mechanical damage. Spotting the early signs of moisture now can save motorists significant time, money and inconvenience later.”

Water-related damage

Jevons continued: “To reduce the risk of water-related damage, regularly inspect and maintain rubber seals, ensuring they are clean and supple. Clear leaves and debris from drainage channels, particularly around the windscreen and bonnet area. Checking under carpets and inside the boot for signs of damp can help identify leaks early.”

“Washing the underbody periodically removes built-up grime and salt, reducing corrosion risk. Applying appropriate protective treatments to vulnerable areas can also extend the life of key components.”

“If you notice persistent condensation, electrical faults after heavy rain, or a musty smell inside your vehicle, it’s important to investigate promptly. Acting quickly can prevent minor moisture ingress from escalating into serious structural or electrical repairs.”

“Taking preventative steps now, especially during the UK’s wetter months, will help keep your car safe, reliable and protected all year round.”
