Nearly half of apprentices in England over 25

New figures have revealed businesses are changing their approach to apprenticeships, with nearly half of all apprentices in England over 25 years old.

According to the House of Commons Library, 48% of apprentice starts are older than 25, with many already employed by the business when they start an apprenticeship.

This suggests a significant change in the way businesses are approaching apprenticeships, with many now using them to develop existing staff as well as recruiting fresh talent.

The figures have been revealed following a change to apprenticeship funding on 1 August intended to support more business access the benefits. Among the key changes, apprentices aged 19 and over are no longer required to study or pass English and Maths, apprenticeships can now be also be offered to part-time employees, while accelerated apprenticeships can now be completed in just eight months.

Further, employers can continue to claim 100% NI tax relief for apprentices aged 16–24.
