Demand for petrol cars plummets 21.2%

Demand for petrol cars has continued to fall in the first six months of 2025 with sales into the 28 major European markets down by 21.2%.

The ACEA has reported that 1,585,357 new petrol cars were registered in the first half of the year, with petrol models accounting for 28.4% of all sales, down from 35.4% in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, diesel cars accounted for 9.4% of all sales after it saw a 28.1% fall in sales.

Combined, the market share of petrol and diesel cars fell from 48.2% in the first half of 2024 to 37.8% in 2025.

Against this, electric car sales rose from 12.5% of the market in the first half of 2024 to 15.6% with 869,271 units sold, while hybrid car registrations surged to 34.8% of the market with 1,942,762 sales, and plug-in hybrid sales of 469,410 units accounted for a 6.9% share of the market.

Electric vehicle sales in June were up 7.8% on the same month last year, with hybrids up 6.1% and plug-in hybrids recording a fourth consecutive month of strong growth with a 41.6% increase.
