Worries mount over unexpected repair bills

Nearly half of drivers are concerned about unexpected repair bills following an MOT test.

According to a survey of 2,000 motorists carried out by Scrap Car Comparison, 46% of respondents said they are worried about unexpected repair bills if their car fails its MOT.

Meanwhile, 20% said they are worried about being left without their car while it’s being repaired and 13% are concerned about repairers recommending unnecessary work to pass the test.

The research also found that 62% of drivers only pay for repairs needed to pass the test and ignore recommended work.

Matt Clamp, car scrappage expert at Scrap Car Comparison, said: “For many drivers, the MOT is more than just a routine check, it’s something that brings a lot of stress and uncertainty. What stands out is how that worry is shaping behaviour, with many people putting their MOT off or leaving issues until the last minute.

“That’s completely understandable, especially when cost is such a big concern. But leaving problems unchecked can often make things worse over time. What might start as a small, manageable issue can turn into something more serious, and more expensive, if it’s ignored.

“There’s also a safety side to it. Delaying an MOT or continuing to drive with known faults can increase the risk of something going wrong on the road, not just for the driver but for others too.”
