Winter driving tips published to improve road safety
Auto Windscreens has produced winter driving guidance to help motorists remain safe of the roads during the colder months.
Drivers are up to 15% more likely to be involved in a collision during winter, with incidents on rural roads rising even more sharply due to poor lighting and potholes.
Meanwhile, braking distances can increase 10-fold on icy or snowy roads and poor weather can reduce visibility.
To reduce risks, Auto Windscreens and Auto Calibrate have worked together to compile a list of six safety tips.
- Visibility: Road salt, spray and winter grime can quickly build up on windscreens and reduce visibility. Check wiper blades for signs of wear or damage and ensure washer fluid is topped up with a suitable winter mix
- Low sun: The sun sitting lower in the sky during winter can create sudden glare and make it harder to see clearly
- Cameras and sensors: Road salt, dirt, snow and ice can build up around cameras and sensors; keep them clean and unobstructed
- Windscreens: Ensure windscreens are not chipped or cracked
- Ice: When roads become icy, accelerate, brake and steer gently, allow more time for the journey and leave additional space to the vehicle ahead.
- Fog: Fog can reduce visibility and response times, so reduce speed, leave more space to the vehicle ahead and use the appropriate lights for the conditions.
