New car sales charged by electric vehicle demand
New car sales in the EU have increased by 4.2% year-to-date, according to new figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
Growth has been driven by strong consumer interest in electric vehicles, with 746,899 registrations in the first four months of the year. This represents 19.7% of all new sales, up from 15.3% in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, hybrid sales rose to 1,447,864 units, which was 38% of the market, and plug-in hybrids increased to 364,067 units and a 9.6% market share.
In contrast, petrol car registrations declined by 17.7% to 854,843 sales and a 28.5% share of the market, while diesels dropped by 16.1% to 7.7% of new car registrations.
