Killed or seriously injured numbers on Northern Ireland roads rise
New figures have revealed an increase in the number of people killed or seriously injured on Northern Ireland roads.
Official statistics show that the number of fatal and serious casualties was 1,140 in 2025/26, which is an increase of 144 on the previous year and more than a quarter higher than a decade ago.
The data found that there was a total of 5,130 injury road traffic collisions recorded in the last year, result in 67 fatalities, 1,073 serious injuries and 6,850 slight injuries.
IAM RoadSmart road safety manager Bruce Steele said: “These figures paint a bleak picture given the increase in pedestrian fatalities and a dramatic increase in serious injuries of all road users.
“It’s imperative that the road safety community, along with the police and the Northern Ireland government work closely to reverse this trend. Enforcement and education remain the most powerful tools to shift behaviours on the road and should be reinforced by strong policy action and collaboration to drive down casualties across Northern Ireland.”
