High repair costs forcing drivers into faulty cars
About 1.7 million motorists are driving with damaged cars because they can’t afford high repair costs.
A survey of 2,000 drivers carried out by Auction4Cars revealed that five per cent of respondents said they have delayed repairs due to mounting costs.
The most common faults included worn out or damaged tyres, worn brakes, cracked windscreens, and broken windscreen wipers.
Further analysis found that 34% of motorists said they had driven with tyres with low pressure, 32% with a chipped or cracked windscreen, 19% with faulty windscreen wipers, and 16% with a damaged exhaust.
Driving a car deemed unroadworthy can incur fines of up to £2,500, three points on your licence, or a driving ban.
John Hood, general manager at Auction4Cars.com, said: “As motorists continue to be squeezed, it’s easy to see why drivers might be tempted to overlook getting their vehicle repaired. However, it’s essential to keep themselves and other road users safe.
“While car repairs can be an unwelcome expense, the reality is it’s often a lot cheaper to get the problem fixed as soon as possible before the issue gets worse. Not to mention, if you are fined, this could stretch into thousands in addition to the cost of the repair.
“To keep your car in running order, regularly complete your car maintenance and book in with a mechanic for anything that needs a professional look over.”
