Surge in electric vehicle sales in Scotland

Electric vehicle sales in Scotland surged by 57% in February compared to the same month in 2024, according to new data from the Scottish Motor Trade Association.
EVs now make up 13.5% of all new sales.
The increase is in contrast to the wider new vehicle market in Scotland, which declined by 9.9% during February. Year-to-date sales are down two per cent so far this year, compared to a one per cent reduction across the UK.
Scottish Motor Trade Association chief executive Alan Gall said: “On the surface, Scotland’s vehicle sales for February have Scotland as an outlier compared with the rest of the UK; however, it does not take too much investigation to see this is only a small part of the story.
“February is always a strange month with private buyers preferring to wait for the new number plate on 1 March, and fleet operators are often in a position of strength in their negotiations with manufacturers desperate to achieve their monthly sales targets.”
Fleet sales fell 19% across the month, although the SMTA expects this to be a blip rather than the start of a longer trend.
