One in eight admit to being nervous drivers

New research from Aviva has found that 12% of motorists in the UK admit to being nervous drivers after having a accident.
The survey of 4,000 adults found that 55% of UK motorists have been involved in a collision while driving.
More than a quarter (27%) say they are now more cautious when driving, 23% are more aware of other drivers and one in five (20%) are more aware of their surroundings when driving. A further 17% also said they drive more safely as a result of being in a collision, with 14% driving slower.
However, 13% said they now only drive when they have to, with 11% admitting they drive less frequently.
The data also broke down the age categories more likely to have an accident, with 71% of drivers aged 25-24 being involved in a collision and 64% of under 24s.
Fear factor
Martin Smith, motor claims manager at Aviva, said: “Driving accidents and incidents – no matter how big or small – can be very distressing and so it’s understandable that one in eight are nervous to get behind the wheel again.
“Although getting back on the road may seem daunting after a collision, there are a few ways to gently ease yourself back into driving. For some, it could be beneficial to do smaller, shorter journeys during quieter periods. For others, additional driving lessons could provide some much-needed confidence and a reminder of the basics.
“Just bear in mind that in some instances, driving too slowly – such as on a motorway – can be dangerous, so always be aware of the speed limits to make sure you’re driving at a safe speed appropriate for the road, traffic conditions and, of course, weather.”
