New survey reveals impossible EV production targets

Impossible EV production targets between 2030 and 2040 have been highlighted by a new survey.

According to ABB Robotics’ third Automotive Manufacturing Outlook Survey, which was carried out with Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, 31% of respondents believe the manufacturing targets set for the industry from 2030 to 2040 are impossible.

This is up from 27% who thought so in the previous survey.

Waning consumer demand and a lack of infrastructure are cited as the main reasons for EV output falling short of targets.

Short term production

In the short term however, 75% of respondents predict EV production to rise in 2025, with 31% predicting an increase of more than 10% and 44% predicting an increase of up to 10%.

Meanwhile, 67% predict an uptick in plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) production this year and 62% predict growth in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) production.

Impossible EV production targets

Joerg Reger, managing director of ABB Automotive Business Line, said: “This year’s survey found that overall, automotive manufacturing professionals are optimistic about EV production growth in 2025, but unsure about reaching 100% electric vehicle production timetables due to factors now often beyond the factory environment.”

Daniel Harrison, chief analyst for Automotive Manufacturing Solutions, added:

“Hybrid passenger vehicle production remains buoyant with the global manufacturing community expecting to produce more cars in 2025. These results support the survey’s main findings that the overall pace of EV adoption is currently not fast enough to reach some of the upcoming legislative deadlines for a 100% electric future.”
