JLR pauses US shipments after new import tariffs

JLR has paused shipments to the US in response to new import tariffs imposed by President Trump.

Last week the US announced 10% tariffs on all global imports with a 25% tariff on imported cars.

JLR exported around 38,000 cars to the US in the third quarter of 2024 – almost as many as it sold in the UK and the EU combined.

In a statement it said: “The USA is an important market for JLR’s luxury brands. As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans.

“Our priorities now are delivering for our clients around the world and addressing these new US trading terms.”

Import tariffs

Meanwhile, the National Franchised Dealers Association has described the tariffs as ‘profound’.

Sue Robinson, chief executive, said: The announcement of a 10% tariff on all UK imports to the US, alongside varying tariffs on other countries/trading blocs – notably a 20% tariff on the European Union – poses significant risks to the sector and the global economy as a whole.

“This is compounded by the introduction of a 25% tariff on cars entering the US which will further exacerbate these challenges. The cumulative effects of these tariffs will be profound, impacting our dealer members who have already shown remarkable resilience in the face of economic challenges, as well as manufacturers and the broader automotive industry.

“I urge the government to take swift and decisive action to safeguard jobs and protect our industry during these unprecedented times.”
