Electric vehicle sales to soar as petrol plummets

More than half of car buyers expect their next purchase to be an electrified car, according to research revealed in the latest Motors Consumer Insight Panel.
The research found that 22% of respondents plan to buy a pure EV, while 30% say they will purchase a hybrid car.
Of the electric car buyers, 57% said they will swap to new EVs, with 27% opting for nearly new and 17% favouring older EVs.
Meanwhile, 37% of hybrid buyers plan to purchase a new car, 33% said they will buy nearly new and 30% prefer older models.
By comparison, the proportion of motorists driving petrol cars is expected to plummet from 64% to just 37% while diesel ownership will halve from 20% to 10%.

Lucy Tugby, marketing director of Motors, said: “Despite the widely reported slowdown in the sale of new EVs to retail customers, our research shows the likelihood of buyers considering one for their next purchase is the highest it has ever been.
“However, consideration for EVs is clearly higher than the day-to-day reality. We believe the primary barrier remains pricing, particularly in the used segment, although they are becoming more affordable as the car parc grows.”
She added: “We think it is important for dealers to be aware that consumers are openly thinking about the transition and consider these vehicles in their stock mix.”
