Electric vehicle mileage greater than petrol cars

Average electric vehicle mileage has exceeded that of petrol cars every month since April 2023, according to new data from Solera cap hpi.
It found that in January 2015 the average electric vehicle was travelling 6,355 miles per year, 2,288 miles less than an average petrol car.
But in January 2025, the average annual mileage of an electric vehicle had increased to 8,740 miles per year, 444 miles more than the petrol average. In fact, electric vehicles have driven further on average than petrol cars every month since April 2023.
Solera cap hpi attributes the increase in electric vehicle mileage to the rapidly improving technology and less range anxiety, as well as vastly improved choice of electric models.
Falling annual mileage
The data also identified reasons for the falling mileage of petrol cars. It found that average annual mileage has fallen 12% in the last decade, with the pandemic exacerbating the long-term downward trend through new work patterns and increased remote working.
Growing environmental awareness and the rise of online shopping has also contributed to the overall reduction in miles driven.
Dylan Setterfield, Solera cap hpi’s head of forecast strategy, said: “Our data reveals that people in the UK are driving increasingly fewer miles now than they were 10 years ago. It also shows that EV motorists now travel further in their cars than drivers of petrol cars and have been doing so consistently for almost two years.
“The data indicates that the changes in driving habits are likely to be long-lasting, reflecting that people’s day-to-day lives now involve less driving than they used to.”
