Drive Europe unveiled by The Motor Ombudsman

The Motor Ombudsman has unveiled a new online hub to support motorists driving in Europe.

Drive Europe includes information about road rules and regulations on the continent, including low emission zones in many European cities.

The guide comes as thousands of UK motorists prepare to drive in Europe for the first time this summer, with 67% of those aged 17 to 28 admitting it will be their first experience of driving abroad.

Without knowing the rules, many risk heavy fines.

For example, the Motor Ombudsman found that 30% were unaware that speed camera detectors on sat-navs or apps are illegal in some countries, while 59% did not know that carrying emergency equipment is mandatory and 70% were unsure about pre-purchased windscreen stickers for entering low-emission zones

Bill Fennell, chief ombudsman and managing director at The Motor Ombudsman, said: “Driving in Europe offers real freedom and flexibility, but it’s clear from the research that some drivers are setting off unprepared.

“From speed limits to mandatory equipment and emission zone rules, there’s a lot to consider – and ignoring the details can quickly turn a relaxing break into an expensive headache.”
