Delphi Academy hosts IMI Skills Competition heats

Delphi Academy hosted IMI Skills Competition heats for both heavy and light vehicle technology at its next-generation training facility in Warwick.

The competition took place from 19-23 May, with Delphi Academy’s technical trainer David Guilfoyle serving as a judge in the light vehicle category.

This follows a £500,000 expansion of the academy in 2024, which now spans 1,430 sqm, features dedicated hybrid, EV and hydrogen wings, and can train up to 64 students daily.

Luke Garratt, UK technical services manager at Delphi, said: “It was a real privilege to accommodate IMI Skills Competition qualifiers. Seeing so many passionate young technicians putting their skills to the test was genuinely inspiring. We’re proud that Delphi Academy’s facilities and team played a part in delivering such a positive experience.”

The IMI Skills Competitions aim to identify and celebrate the very best emerging technicians in the industry, with competition streams covering automotive technology, body repair, refinishing, and heavy vehicle technology.

It begins with an online test, followed by regional qualifiers and a national final. At Delphi Academy, participants tackled a series of quick-fire 45-minute workshop tasks across various disciplines including electrics, brakes and high voltage.

Sarah Sparkes, head of marketing and communications at the IMI, said: “The IMI is committed to nurturing the next generation of automotive talent, and what better way than through initiatives like the IMI Skills Competition, which celebrate technical excellence and ambition.

“Supporting retention and progression means giving individuals clear, inspiring pathways to grow their careers. This competition showcases the incredible potential within our sector and reinforces the IMI’s mission to champion professional development at every stage.”
