Consumer uncertainty around EVs increasing

New research has revealed that consumer uncertainty around EVs has increased in the last two years, with more than a quarter now saying they’ll never buy one.

Meanwhile, the findings also showed that the reasons buyers are hesitant remain unchanged, with price, charging infrastructure and range still key concerns.

According to the latest consumer research from Bridgestone, 40% of drivers say they are now uncertain about EV adoption, which is up from 27% last year and 22% three years ago.

Meanwhile, more than a quarter (27%) said they would never buy an EV, which is up by five per cent in two years.

High purchase costs remain the number one deterrent for 59% of respondents, up from 42% in 2024, while access to charging infrastructure (62%), charge costs (53%), and range (48%) are also key concerns.

Bridgestone’s UK and Ireland consumer sales director Drew Chapman said: “Our research tells us that while the appetite for EVs remains strong, however, the confidence to commit is still not quite there for many.”

However, the research also found that 53% of consumers confirmed that they would be making the switch within the next five years.
