Bank Holiday traffic to reach 18 million journeys

Bank Holiday traffic is set to soar this weekend with nearly 18 million road trips expected from Friday to Monday, with Friday and Saturday the busiest days.
This is almost a million more than the May Day Bank Holiday at the start of the month.
According to the RAC and transport analyst INRIX, 17.9 million car journeys will be taken this weekend, with about 3.4 million trips expected on both Friday and Saturday.
That drops to 2.7 million on Sunday before rising again to more than three million on Monday.
Meanwhile a further 5.4 million car journeys are expected to take place over the Bank Holiday, although drivers have not decided on what day they will travel.
INRIX predicts that the M25 will be the busiest motorway in the UK, with main arteries to the West Country also likely to be extremely busy.
RAC Mobile Mechanic Aaron Bryan said: “Our research shows it really is best to leave as early or late as possible this bank holiday weekend, as the majority of motorists are planning to set off in the morning.
“While Devon and Cornwall remain some of the most popular destinations for summer getaways, many other major routes across the country could be hit by increased traffic – not least the M25 which so many drivers use to reach the coast and the South East. These stretches are likely to be equally as busy on Friday 30 May when drivers use the same roads for return journeys.”
