A third of new car sales now hybrids

More than a third of new car sales across Europe this year have been hybrid, according to new figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association.
It found that hybrid sales rose by 18.7% in January and February to 594,059 units, which represented 35% of all new car sales.
By contrast, petrol sales fell 20.5% to 489,838 units and diesel sales were down 28%. Combined, petrol and diesel sales accounted for 38.8% of all new car sales, which is a 10% decrease on the same period in 2024.
Petrol’s market share fell from 35%% to 29.1% while diesel collapsed from 36% to just as 9.7% market share.
Meanwhile, pure electrics made up 15.2% of new car sales in the first two months of 2025, up from 11.5% in the first two months of 2024. This equates to a 28.4% increase, or 255,489 more sales.
