Drivers unaware of green plates

New figures have found that 62% of new car buyers don’t even know what green number plates are.

The number plate change takes place this month, but Auto Trader has revealed that the majority of motorists do not know reach that green number plates represent zero-emission vehicles.

This is despite the SMMT forecasting a 59% rise in registrations of purely electric vehicles in 2021, pushing its market share up to 9.5%.However, one in five (18%) said they’d still never consider buying an electric car, showing there’s some way to go yet to change minds and attitudes.

Auto Trader’s Rory Reid said: “Since green plates were launched in December 2020 as an easy identifier for zero-emission vehicles, pick up of these has started to grow, albeit slowly. Remember that if you have a fully zero-emissions car then you can apply to the DVLA for a green number plate. And if you’re buying a brand new electric car ready for the September plate change, then you can ask the dealership to supply one instead of a regular number plate.”
