VW reports strong first quarter

Volkswagen consolidated its second position in the UK market during the first quarter of this year.

Official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that year-to-date the brand has sold 59,519 cars for a market share of 8.49% – that’s up 3.59% on the same period in 2018 in a UK market that, as a whole, is 2.43% down in the first three months of the year.

Patrick McGillycuddy, head of sales for Volkswagen, said, ‘While it’s pleasing for us to see Golf and Polo performing so well and, clearly, appealing to UK buyers in their tens of thousands, the breadth of Volkswagen’s model range is also playing a big part in this sales success.

‘The T-Roc, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Touareg SUV models, along with the up! city car and Touran and Sharan MPVs, have all made an impact with UK buyers while the growing appeal of cars such as the e-Golf cannot be underestimated.

‘All this comes even before the market introduction of our newest offering, the practical T-Cross compact SUV, which will arrive in showrooms later this month. We believe that, through our superb network of Retailers nationwide, T-Cross will only serve to further enhance Volkswagen’s retail and fleet sector appeal here which, as the new SMMT figures reveal, is already running high.’
