Used car sales enjoy September spike

Used car sales rose by 7.9% month-on-month in September, according the latest Brego Car Market Insight Report.

However, the report also found that the average number of days it took a used car to sell increased by 10.6% to 42.9 days – although electric vehicles outperformed the wider market with average days-to-sale recorded at 38.2 days.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y Long Range was the most popular used car with 1,254 sales during the month, ahead of the Fiat 500 (985) and the Toyota Yaris Hybrid (911).

Rupert Pontin, head of insight and communications at Brego, said: “September brought a welcome recovery in used car sales after August but the increase in activity needs to be considered alongside growing stock availability and longer selling times.

“For dealers, a busier market does not automatically mean every car will move more quickly. Understanding demand at derivative level, selecting the right stock and pricing it realistically remain essential.”
