DIY vehicle maintenance on the increase

New research has found that half of motorists carry out basic vehicle maintenance at home.

Vehicle diagnostics specialist TOPDON surveyed of more than 2,000 UK drivers and found that one in two try to solve simple car problems themselves before booking with a specialist.

The most common tasks carried out include reading and understanding engine warning lights, resetting oil service reminders, and routine functions such as electronic parking brake calibration.

The trend is not about turning away from workshops but turning up to them better informed.

Oscar Diaz, CEO, TOPDON Europe, said: “Modern cars tell you a great deal about their own health, but until recently that information was locked away from the people who own them.

“We want drivers to feel empowered to understand their vehicle and handle the simple things like checking a warning light or resetting a service reminder. For anything beyond that, our message is unambiguous: see a garage professional. An informed customer and a skilled technician is the best combination on the road.”
