Car maintenance knowledge gaps exposed
More than half of UK drivers lack basic understanding of car maintenance, according to new research from Saga Car Insurance.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency requires learners to answer questions on essential under-bonnet components but 55% of drivers don’t believe they’d pass this section of the test if quizzed today.
Its survey of 1,000 UK drivers found that nine per cent would not be confident in identifying any of the main under-bonnet components, while 42% were not confident in their understanding of dashboard warning symbols.
Ali Ingram-Seal, head of Saga Car Insurance, said: “Poorly maintained cars put you, your passengers, and other road users at risk. Neglecting regular checks can result in engine failures and breakdowns, which could be dangerous if they occur while driving.
“Ensuring fluid top-ups are performed regularly and dashboard warnings are adhered to are a basic but essential responsibility for all drivers; it’s up to each of us to understand the basics of car maintenance.”
