UK’s drink driving hotspots revealed
New research has identified the areas in the UK with the highest number of drink driving penalty points.
Released to mark Alcohol Awareness Week, which runs from 6-12 July, the study carried out by MoneySuperMarket found that Luton topped the list of drink driving penalty points with 3.31. It was followed by Carlisle (2.87), Torquay (2.64), and Norwich (2.38).
The survey of UK motorists further revealed that one in four UK drivers believe that lowering the drink-driving limit could help reduce the number of Driving Under the Influence offences.
Under current legislation, the alcohol limit is no more than 35 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath, and 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. Penalties include six months imprisonment, an unlimited fine, and a one-year ban from driving. Meanwhile, drivers convicted of causing death by dangerous driving could face an unlimited fine, a five-year ban from driving, or life imprisonment.

Drink driving
Alicia Hempsted, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Alcohol Awareness Week should serve as a reminder that even small amounts of alcohol can impair judgment behind the wheel. If you’re heading out, consider alternative transport options such as taxis or designated drivers. Choosing not to drive after a drink is a matter of safety and not just about staying within the law.”
“A drink-driving conviction can also have a serious financial impact on top of legal consequences. Insurers view these offences as high-risk, which means premiums can rise significantly, and some providers may refuse cover altogether.”
