More than half of drivers would fail driving theory test

More than half of motorists believe they would fail their driving theory test if they had to retake it.

According to a survey of 12,475 drivers carried out by AA Driving School, only 44% said they believed they would pass the theory test although 78% were confident of passing their practical driving test.

Among those who thought they’d fail their theory test, 90% said they did not know the Highway Code well enough to pass. Meanwhile, 59% thought they didn’t know the rules of the road, 50% said they lacked knowledge of road signs, safety and vehicle knowledge was identified by 35% with 33% citing hazard perception.

Demand for theory tests is at a record high with 2,792,839 tests carried out in 2024/25, according to the DVSA.

Highway Code

Emma Bush, managing director of AA Driving School, said: “Our research shows that while many drivers still feel confident about their practical driving skills, far fewer feel the same about the theory test. The Highway Code changes over time, roads change, vehicles change and the way we use the road changes too, so it is important for all drivers to keep their knowledge fresh.

“For learners preparing for their test now, good preparation is key. The AA Driving School theory test app can help learners practise in a way that fits around their lives, build confidence and understand the rules before they get behind the wheel.”
