Drivers warned against Monday blues after World Cup tie

AA Accident Assist has urged caution during the Monday morning rush hour with England set to kick off against Mexico in the World Cup at 1am.

The last-16 tie will not finish until nearly 3am and it could be nearer 4am if the match requires extra time and penalties. That means fans who stay up to watch the game will begin their morning commute on just a few hours’ sleep.

However, tiredness slows reaction times, reduces concentration, affects decision-making and increases the chance of drivers falling asleep at the wheel, with research estimating that up to one in four fatal and serious road collisions could be fatigue-related.

Opening a window or turning the radio up can help but these are temporary distractions and do not combat tiredness.

The AA is now urging fans to think ahead before kick-off by considering whether journeys can be delayed, lifts shared or public transport used where possible.

Underestimated risk

Tim Rankin, managing director of AA Accident Assist, said: “England’s match against Mexico is exactly the sort of fixture that captures the nation’s attention, but it also creates the perfect conditions for tired drivers the following morning.

“If supporters are staying up until nearly 3am to watch the game, or even 4am if the match goes to extra time and penalties, they need to think carefully about how they’ll get through Monday morning safely.

“Drowsy driving is an underestimated risk on our roads. Just like drink driving, tiredness affects your reactions, judgement and concentration, yet many people still underestimate how dangerous it can be.

“If you’re too tired to drive safely, don’t get behind the wheel. Delay your journey if you can or wait until you’ve had enough sleep. No football match is worth risking your life for let alone anyone else’s.”

Top tips:

  • Stop driving at the first sign of tiredness
  • Park in a safe place
  • Drink two cups of coffee or another caffeinated drink.
  • Take a 15-20 minute nap before continuing your journey.
