Average width of tyres increasing, finds epyx

New data has revealed that the average width of tyres has grown by an inch since 2023.

According to analysis of work carried out through the epyx 1link Service Network, the average tyre fitted to a petrol or diesel car has increased from 17 inches to 18 inches in the last two years.

Meanwhile, the average width of a tyre fitted to an electric vehicle has increased from 18 inches to 19 inches in the same period of time. However, the average width of tyres for hybrid cars has remained stable at 18 inches.

epyx’s 1link Service Network is used by UK fleets to process service, maintenance and repair jobs for almost 20,000 company vehicles every day.

Trends

Tim Meadows, epyx CCO, said: “There’s several ongoing trends here; most cars are getting bigger, SUVs are becoming more popular and larger wheels are preferred for cosmetic reasons.

“However, there’s no real upside for businesses operating cars. Not only do bigger wheels have a direct impact on tyre prices but also on replacement – larger, wider tyres tend to be more susceptible to punctures and kerb damage. This leaves fleets in a position where they are spending more and more on tyres over time.”
