Electric vehicles drive car sales in Europe
Strong demand for electric vehicles saw car sales in Europe increase by 1.7% in February, according to new data from JATO Dynamics.
It reported that 978,190 units were registered during the month, with growth driven by a 16% year-on-year increase in electrified vehicles.
Plug-in hybrid sales were up 34% to account for 9.9% of all sales, while mild plug-in hybrid sales rose by 12% to a 25% market share. Hybrid registrations increased by eight per cent to make up nearly 14% of all sales. Combined, electric vehicles accounted for 19.4% of all new car sales in Europe in February.
In terms of brands, Skoda saw a 112% surge in electric vehicle sales, followed by Ford (97%), and Toyota (97%).
Against this, petrol and diesel combined sales fell by 20% year-over-year.

“Electrification is clearly happening. But interestingly, car manufacturers’ performance is varying a lot between different electrified powertrain types, as they navigate through the business environment of electrification transition.”
