Hybrid demand doubles in January

New data has revealed a surge in hybrid demand during January, with its market more than doubling during the month.

According to Dealer Auction’s EV Performance Review, hybrids accounted for 12% of all sales in January, up from six per cent in December.

The data also found that the average age of sold vehicles increased to 6.2 years, although the average age of alternative fuel vehicles was just four years.

In terms of the best-performing models, three electric cars made the top 10 with the Renault Scenic E-Tech EV taking top spot, followed by the Honda Kona in third and the Tesla Model 3 in ninth.

Market demand

Dealer Auction marketplace director Kieran TeeBoon said: “It’s remarkable to see how strongly hybrid vehicles have performed at the very start of 2026, stealing five per cent of the market share from diesel. We’re also encouraged by the substantial increase in bids across all AFVs, which reflects a dealer market that’s already gaining momentum for the year ahead.”

He concluded: “January has been a particularly strong month for mainstream brands like Renault, Hyundai and Nissan. While it’s encouraging to see familiar favourites continuing to perform well, it’s equally positive to see new models making meaningful gains.

“The strong mix of hybrid and electric vehicles sets an exciting tone for the year ahead, and we look forward to seeing which models drive both sales and profitability as 2026 progresses.”
