Cyber criminals turn sights on UK vehicle remarketing sector

The UK vehicle remarketing sector is increasingly vulnerable to cybercrime due to high staff turnover.

According to Mark Rodbert, chief executive of idax Software, who was speaking at the first Vehicle Remarketing Association meeting of the year, the attrition rate among the UK vehicle remarketing workforce makes it more difficult for employers to embed lasting and robust safeguards.

He said the sector is also appealing to fraudsters because of the amount of customer data it manages.

Rodbert said: “Hackers only have to succeed once to cause damage, whereas businesses need to be vigilant all the time, so cybersecurity is always a difficult area, but there are some signs that it is a war where we are successfully fighting back.

“The important thing to realise is that cybercriminals pinpoint very human weaknesses, and the people carrying out the attacks are experts. This is their job. Resistance starts with creating the right culture among your people.”

Philip Nothard, chair of the Vehicle Remarketing Association, added: “The types of crime affecting remarketing are constantly changing and adapting, and our members are very much aware of the financial and reputational impact of becoming victims.”
