Drivers risk £1,000 fines for dirty number plates

Drivers have been warned that dirty number plates could land them a fine of £1,000 this winter.

Rain, snow, slush and mud can mean plates quickly become caked in grime, making registrations hard to read.

But the Highway Code stipulates that ‘lights, indicators, reflectors, and number plates must be kept clean and clear’ at all times.

MoneySuperMarket’s car insurance expert Alicia Hempsted, said: “While having a dirty car isn’t illegal, driving with an obscured number plate could land you in trouble.

“The Highway Code makes it clear that your registration plate must always be visible so that police and other road users can identify your vehicle. If it’s obscured, you could face a fine of up to £1,000.

“To avoid unnecessary penalties, make it part of your routine to check your number plates before setting off – especially during winter months when mud and spray can build up quickly.”
