One in seven used cars could have false mileage
New research has revealed that one in seven used cars have evidence of mileage tampering or Vehicle Identification Number manipulation.
According to analysis carried out by Carly of more than 2.5 million diagnostic sessions of over 550,000 used cars in the UK, 16% displayed evidence of mileage fraud or identity discrepancies.
Dali Ati, head of internationalisation at Carly, said: “Mileage tampering can make a car appear newer and more valuable than it really is. But beneath the surface, it could be far more worn and that’s where unexpected problems begin.
“We want drivers to feel informed and in control before they spend their money. A quick Carly scan, using the Carly Used Car Check, can uncover these hidden issues in just minutes, and these checks can save buyers thousands.”
Clocked mileage
The results follow similar research last year that found about 2.1 of the 1.9 million used cars are bought and sold every quarter in the UK have clocked mileage.
The research, carried out by CarVertical, found that used cars under five years old are not immune either, with data indicating that 1.89% of vehicles in this category have mileage discrepancies.
Lowering a vehicle’s mileage falsely can increase its sale price by up to 25%.
