Stricter penalties for double yellow line infringements
More than a third of drivers believe there should be stricter penalties for double yellow line infringements.
An AA survey of over 15,000 motorists found that 34% believe the penalties for parking on double yellow lines are too lenient. Nearly half (48%) said the penalties were ‘about right’ while 14% were unsure and only four per cent thought they were too strict.
The highest level of concern was found in the West Midlands (38%), followed by Yorkshire & Humberside and East Midlands (36%).
The survey also found that inconsistent enforcement is eroding public trust, with just 13% of those who admitted to parking on double yellow lines saying they had received a fine or penalty.
Jack Cousens, AA head of roads policy, said:
“We urge local authorities to focus on high-risk zones, near schools, hospitals, and busy junctions, where illegal parking poses the greatest danger.”
