Escooters involved in 2,095 collisions in three years

Escooters have been linked to more than 2,000 traffic collisions in England and Wales in the last three years.

Figures from 28 forces found that there have been 2,095 crashes involving escooters since 2022.

This is despite a growing number of police seizures during that period, with a total of 5,813 escooters seized for illegal or antisocial activity. The data also revealed that numbers are rising, with 1,624 taken off the roads three years ago, 1,635 seized two years ago and 2,554 last year.

This equates to five a day.

Escooter trials

In response to an online petition calling for greater escooter regulation, the government is now evaluating the results of escooter trials to assess safety challenges around integrating them into the wider road network.

It said: “The government is giving the police stronger powers to stop vehicles being used disruptively, with officers no longer required to issue a warning before seizing illegally owned private e-scooters. This will allow them to deal swiftly with dangerous e-scooters on pavements.

“New Respect Orders will give the police and local councils powers to ban persistent offenders from certain areas where they are causing harm, and failure to comply with Respect Orders will be a criminal offence.”
