SERMI set for UK launch after securing approval

The Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme has been approved to launch in the UK later this year.

Approval is expected to provide independent shops with easier access to manufacturer data vital to repairing modern vehicles.

Manufacturers have long been reluctant to provide data around key coding, ECU programming and software downloads to independents because of perceived security concerns. This has swayed the balance of power in the UK automotive aftermarket towards franchised dealerships and authorised repairers.

SERMI aims to redress the balance by vetting professionals through a centralised certification system, easing manufacturer fears and enabling approved professionals streamlined data access.

The scheme has now been adapted for the UK market after continuous work by the Independent Garage Association, and approved by UK regulatory body UKAS.

Level playing field

Stuart James, IGA chief executive, said: “We are delighted that after many years the scheme has finally come to fruition, really levelling the playing field. Subject to final documents being issued, we anticipate it going live this year.

“SERMI not only simplifies access to vital security-related data but also underscores the integrity and professionalism of certified garages.

“Participation in this scheme is crucial for the future success and competitiveness of independent garages. This is a bold affirmation of the crucial role independent garages play in our automotive ecosystem. This initiative represents a landmark victory for the independent garage sector.”
