Recovery vehicles get green light for red lights

HELLA has unveiled a new rear-facing red flashing lamp for recovery vehicles, following a change in legislation.

Previously, red flashing lamps were reserved exclusively for emergency services.

However, the government announced a change in regulations in its Plan for Drivers, which allows recovery firms to apply to the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) for a VSO to use red flashing lamps.

The news has been hailed as a significant step forward in safety for the vehicle recovery sector.

Safety milestone

Following the announcement, HELLA has developed the BST 2.0 red flashing lamp, which features six high-performance power LEDs. Roadside technicians can select from five flashing sequences or a permanent light mode, with a manual day/night setting allowing for light intensity adjustment.

Dave Clark, product manager for universal lighting at HELLA, said: “This legislation is the result of a prolonged campaign to enhance the visibility and safety of those working in recovery.

“Allowing red flashing lights alongside traditional amber ones will greatly increase the visibility of stationary recovery vehicles on high-speed roads, helping to reduce the risk of tragic collisions.”
