Used electric cars fastest-selling fuel type

Used electric cars have been selling quicker than any other fuel type in August, according to new data from Autotrader.

Its research found that used electric cars are selling in an average of 27 days, which is one day quicker than last month and two days quicker than the same time last year.

Autotrader also revealed that half of the 10 fastest-selling models are electric.

This is a sharp turnaround from June, when electric cars were the slowest selling fuel type at 32 days. This could be attributed to the new Electric Car Grant, with used electric cars increasing their share of the market from 5.3% to six per cent since it was introduced in July.

Meanwhile, the overall average time to sale for used cars is 29 days. The fastest selling used car on the platform is the Vauxhall Corsa, up to a year old, which is finding a buyer in just 15 days.

New trend

Marc Palmer, head of strategy and insights, said: “With electric cars continuing to sell quickly in August, the data suggests July wasn’t just a blip but hopefully the beginning of a longer-term trend of used electric car success for retailers.

“Overall, the market is robust with speed of sale holding firm and even accelerating in August, which isn’t a typical seasonal trend over the slower summer months. Combined with the broader positive market fundamentals we’re tracking, it should provide retailers with confidence for the second half of 2025.

“However, with an ever-evolving market, from government policy to changing consumer preferences, retailers can best set themselves up for success by utilising all the data available when making their stocking and pricing decisions.”
