Dealers back electric vehicle battery health check scheme

New research has found widespread dealership support for a recognised used electric vehicle battery health check scheme.

A survey of 60 dealers revealed that 90% back the introduction of an industry-wide battery health check scheme for used electric vehicles to increase confidence among prospective buyers.

The Startline Used Car Tracker also revealed that 78% of customers said battery health was among the most important factors to consider when buying a used electric vehicle. It found that 38% believe battery health checks should be managed by the industry with a recognised standard established, by 36% say the scheme should be regulated by government.

Paul Burgess, Startline Motor Finance chief executive, said: “Dealers are obviously at the sharp end of selling used cars and essentially, this data is telling us the overwhelming majority believe the sector needs some form of formal battery health check scheme.

“In a used electric car market where residual values remain low and there is a general degree of concern about the volume of vehicles starting to circulate, this is a move that could help to persuade potential buyers who are concerned about the possibility of battery failure or degradation. It could give them the confidence to buy.”
