South East region dominates UK motor claims

The South East has accounted more than a fifth of UK motor claims in the past five years, according to new research.

Analysis carried out by Go.Compare has revealed that 20.03% of all UK motor claims were in the South East.

The East Midlands accounted for 14.48% of the national total, with the most common type of claim in both regions being, ‘Accident – driver at fault but no injuries.’

Meanwhile, 12.64% of motor claims during the past five years were in the North West, although the leading claim type was, ‘Accident – driver not at fault and recovered all costs and excess.’

The fewest number of claims were recorded in the Isle of Man (0.01%) and the Channel Islands (0.02%).

Type of claim

The data also found that the most expensive type of claim was for vehicle theft when the vehicle wasn’t recovered, with average pay outs of £13,000.

Claims for storm and flood damage average £4,084, while average repair costs exceed £2,000 per claim.

Tom Banks, car insurance spokesperson for Go.Compare, said: “It’s fascinating to see the regional spread of claims across the UK, and how major infrastructure like the M1, M5, and M6 may influence this. These are some of the busiest arteries of UK road traffic and run through many of the top regions for claims.

“There are plenty of smart ways to make sure you are saving money where you can on your car insurance. From limiting mileage to choosing the right policy add-ons, a few simple steps can make a big difference.”
