Electric vehicle buyers open to new brands

New research has revealed that electric vehicle buyers are more open to new or emerging brands than motorists seeking petrol or diesel models.

What Car? surveyed more than 3,000 in-market car buyers. Of those seeking electric cars, it found that just 20% wanted a model from an established vehicle manufacturer.

More than half (51%) had no preference, while almost a third (31%) were actively seeking a vehicle from a new or emerging brand. Just 16% of electric car buyers wanted a model from a new brand last year, suggesting new entrants to market are quickly gaining consumer trust.

In fact, 83% of drivers considering a new brand said they were confident in their choice, with long range (33%) and affordability (30%) the main reasons.

However, this in stark contrast to drivers looking for a petrol or diesel car, with 61% favouring a traditional car manufacturer and only five per cent saying they would consider a new brand.

About 100,000 cars made in China were sold in the UK last year, accounting for one in 10 new car sales.
