UK technician qualifies for world finals
UK’s Mitsubishi Motors Master Technician of the Year will take on the best Mitsubishi Motors technicians in the world after finishing in the top three of a Europe-wide competition.
Alan Williamson of Park’s Ayr Mitsubishi will travel to Mitsubishi Motors’ Tokyo headquarters in February 2021 to compete in the manufacturer’s Global Technician of the Year competition. He qualified for the prestigious event following his top three finish in the European Technician contest.
Competing against 17 other top Mitsubishi Motors technicians, with each one being recognised as the best in their respective countries, Alan finished third. He earned his place in the European competition, which took place at Mitsubishi Motors Europe’s headquarters in the Netherlands, after winning the Mitsubishi Motors in the UK Master Technician of the Year title in December.
Williamson qualified for the global competition based on his performance in a series of five practical tasks. Included was the requirement to diagnose an installed fault with the hybrid drivetrain control system of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which entailed safe isolation of the 300 volt battery, prior to accurate diagnosis.
Each task was completed against the clock with contestants only receiving a brief description of the fault’s symptoms, the limited details designed to replicate how a customer may attempt to explain an issue with their vehicle.
He said: “The tasks were quite complex and the other technicians were very highly skilled, so I was really pleased to make the podium. It was a great experience and I’m really looking forward to Tokyo – it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go and I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity.”
Richard Weller, director of aftersales, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, said: “It’s a fantastic result for Alan and a great illustration of the extensive training that our technicians, and ultimately our customers, benefit from. We wish him all the best for the global competition, and he can travel to Tokyo knowing that everyone at Mitsubishi Motors in the UK and our entire dealer network is behind him.”
