Watch-list for fleet managers published by IAM RoadSmart

Road safety charity IAM RoadSmart has highlighted the key issues expected to impact fleet managers in the next 12 months.

Policy and standards director Nicholas Lyes has turned the spotlight on drink driving, parking charges, fuel duty and new government consultations.

He said that the government’s new Road Safety Strategy has proposed a reduction in the drink-driving limit in England and Wales from 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath to 22 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

With 52% of companies reporting a drink-driving incident in the last three years, Lyes has urged fleet managers to strengthen drink-driving policy and training provision.

Meanwhile, fleet managers have also been advised that all private parking sites must adhere to the Private Parking Single Code of Practice by December. The new Code of Practice aims to improve transparency around charges with a new Appeals Charter to support drivers who believe they have been unfairly penalised.

Lyes has also warned fleet managers of a rise in fuel duty from September as the government begins to revers the 5p a litre cut, and encouraged the sector to help shape the industry by taking part in consultations around autonomous vehicles and the proposed electric Vehicle Excise Duty.

Lyes said: “It’s clear that 2026 is set to be a busy year for business fleets, and there are many new considerations that fleet managers will need to make in response to evolving regulations and emerging trends.

“Fleets should be doing everything that they can now to prepare for the changes and, in doing so, avoid any unpleasant bumps in the road ahead.”
