Used electric vehicle insurance polices surpass 2025 total
Used electric vehicle insurance policies sold this year have already exceeded the total number in 2025, according to RAC Warranty.
It sold more than 15,000 electric vehicle policies in the first six months of the year compared to fewer than 13,000 last year and 8,000 in 2024.
Meanwhile, policy volumes for hybrids are also increasing rapidly with sales close to 25,000 in the first half of this year, which is almost identical to 2025’s total figure
Lee Coomber, RAC client director at Assurant, which partners with the RAC in the aftersales market, said: “We launched a dedicated EV warranty in 2020, so have extensive experience of creating policies for this kind of vehicle. For a long time, this was a specialist area but it does feel as though a corner is being turned and electric cars are becoming a more and more popular choice.
“Already in 2026, they have accounted for a significant proportion of our sales volume and based on current trends, we expect volumes to continue growing strongly in the second half of the year.
“Increasingly, the large numbers of EVs that have been bought by fleets in recent times are entering the remarketing cycle and benefiting from growing consumer interest in lower running-cost vehicles.”
